Jail oversight commission to hear UCLA study on 509 LA County jail deaths
UCLA research finds people in county jails died a median of 57.5 days after arrest, with overdose and COVID-19 deaths rising.
A UCLA study presented to the county's jail inspection commission reports 509 deaths in Los Angeles County jails from 2008 to 2023, with deaths occurring far later into confinement than national figures suggest. Researcher Nick Shapiro and co-authors call for shorter jail stays, expanded substance use treatment and more out-of-cell time.
