Auditor finds 92% of Sheriff's public complaint reviews missed the 30-day deadline

County audit says 465 of 503 complaints filed to patrol stations in early 2025 were late by an average of 94 days.

Board of Supervisors· posted Sep 24Report

People who complain about Sheriff's deputies often wait months for a result and are not told when reviews are delayed or when an outcome is reversed on appeal. The Auditor-Controller made nine recommendations, which the Sheriff's Department agreed to, with some changes tied to union negotiations and a new system by September 30, 2027.

What happens next

Auditor-Controller will assess implementation during a follow-up review.
